Centurion Hospice Rebrands to Centurion Care Centre Amid Restructuring

Centurion Hospice underwent a significant transformation on October 1, as it rebranded to Centurion Care Centre. This move was part of the organization’s restructuring process following the cessation of its palliative care services in the Centurion area on September 30 due to financial constraints.

In July, the organization faced the tough decision of shutting down its in-patient care service, as it could no longer sustain its in-patient care unit financially.

Previously, the hospice played a crucial role in offering palliative and psycho-social care to patients in Centurion, Midrand, Monument Park, Olievenhoutbosch, and Pretoria West.

According to hospice spokesperson Hyla van den Berg, patients who were receiving palliative care services from the hospice were seamlessly transitioned to Sungardens Hospice to ensure continuity of care and minimize negative impacts.

Commitment to Community Care

In a recent statement, the hospice expressed its dedication to maintaining high-quality care within the community. The organization is exploring various strategies to realign its operations and uphold its commitment to the community.

The statement outlined the continuation of essential services such as the Legacy & Book Shop, medical equipment rentals, and Memory Lane Café. These services aim to generate funds to settle outstanding debts and fortify the organization’s long-term sustainability.

Van den Berg emphasized the pivotal role of the Legacy bookshop as the primary source of income, driven by public donations. The organization’s thrift store and restaurant will also remain operational to provide additional support to the community.

The organization is actively seeking to diversify its community services while ensuring financial stability through sound business practices and a steady flow of funds to meet operational needs.

Future Plans and Operational Hours

Looking ahead, the organization aims to implement a new business model to address sustainability challenges and enhance service delivery. One proposed initiative involves establishing a market-related frail care facility to generate revenue for reinstating home-based palliative care services.

The Centurion Care Centre’s current operational hours are as follows:

• Trading Hours: Mondays (09:00-16:00), Tuesday – Friday (08:00-16:00), Saturdays (08:00-13:00)
• Office Hours: Monday-Friday (08:00-16:00)

Community members are encouraged to continue supporting the organization through donations, which can be made directly at the premises.

Community Engagement and Support

Concerns were raised by Friends of Hospice member Dorothy Wye regarding the decision-making process that led to the discontinuation of palliative care services. Wye highlighted the success of a recent market event hosted at the hospice, which received overwhelming support from the community.

Despite challenges, the organization remains committed to exploring new opportunities to serve the community effectively and sustainably. It aims to engage with stakeholders and leverage community support to navigate current challenges and fulfill its mission of providing quality healthcare services.
