Angela Yeung Prepares to Conquer Ama Dablam Peak in Nepal to Raise Awareness on Gender-Based Violence

Angela Yeung, the founder of the Illovo-based Impilo Collection Foundation and a proud ambassador for Brand South Africa, is gearing up to tackle the challenging Ama Dablam peak in Nepal as part of her mission to raise awareness about gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

Standing tall at 6,812 meters, Ama Dablam is known for its steep and technical terrain. Yeung, a resident of Sandton, has previous high-altitude expedition experience, having successfully summited Manaslu at 8,163 meters in 2023.

Yeung views the Ama Dablam climb as a greater challenge than her past achievements, requiring advanced technical skills for navigating ice, rocks, and snow.

For Yeung, this expedition symbolizes the immense and unconquered challenge that GBVF poses to many women who endure fear and silence.

“The mountain I am climbing represents the journey to a young woman’s voice, her empowerment, and the independence we all aspire to,” shared Yeung.

Her expedition goes beyond personal accomplishment; it is a quest to break the stigma surrounding GBVF and direct funds towards educational initiatives supporting young women impacted by gender-based violence.

The Impilo Collection Foundation is recognized for its impactful work addressing GBVF, including the #EmpowerHer campaign launched in 2022. This initiative collected 8,848 bras, symbolizing the height of Mount Everest, to raise awareness about GBVF.

Inspired by the name Ama Dablam, meaning mother’s necklace, Yeung interprets her climb as a tribute to the nurturing strength of women.

Scheduled from October 9 to November 3, Yeung’s expedition is backed by sponsors such as Cathay Pacific, GoPro, and Zara Wellness. She plans to carry the South African flag and brand logos to the summit, acknowledging her country and sponsors who support her cause.

“The battle against GBVF relies on the collective strength of all supporters and allies. Together, we can move mountains and create a lasting impact,” Yeung concluded.
