A multiparty coalition of the ANC, EFF and ActionSA with Dr Nasiphi Moya from ActionSA as mayor has been elected to govern the Tshwane council affairs. Moya competed for the position against the former mayor, Cilliers Brink of the DA, on October 9.

Following a council meeting, Moya was appointed mayor with a vote count of 122, while Brink received 86 votes. The election process was overseen by the IEC with observers from all parties, and the results were duly confirmed by the IEC.

After being sworn in by Acting Chief Magistrate V Mahlangu, Moya emphasized in her inaugural speech a need to set aside political differences and focus on efficient governance. She pledged to prioritize essential services such as road maintenance, consistent electricity supply, and clean water provision for all residents.

Moya announced plans to establish a mayoral committee, emphasizing principles of financial discipline and anti-corruption as central tenets of her mayoral term. The ANC highlighted in a media briefing that their National Working Committee had greenlighted the team under the Secretary-General’s leadership to finalize negotiations on the new mayor of Tshwane.

According to the ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri, the deteriorating state of governance and service delivery under the DA-led coalitions in Tshwane prompted the ANC to take action to restore the city’s functionality. Bhengu-Motsiri emphasized the ANC’s commitment to uniting all willing parties to collaboratively rebuild a prosperous and service-oriented capital city.

The DA now assumes the position of the official opposition in the council. In response, DA spokesperson Kwena Moloto expressed reservations about the coalition dynamics and the selection of Moya as mayor, suggesting potential challenges in governance accountability.

Other opposition parties, such as the Freedom Front Plus, voiced concerns regarding the integrity of Mayor Moya due to prior issues related to overdue payments to the metro. These concerns are framed within the context of ensuring transparent and accountable leadership within the council.
