The Sunnyside police conducted a crime prevention operation resulting in the arrest of 19 suspects over the weekend. Brigadier Matshidiso Kgoadi, the station commander of Sunnyside SAPS, led the operation on October 4, along with Visible Police Commander, Colonel MJ Steenkamp.

Named Operation Safer Festive Season, the operation was a collaborative effort involving stakeholders such as the Sunnyside CPF, Gauteng Traffic inspectors, wardens, and patrollers. The primary objective was to enhance safety during the festive season for residents in the Sunnyside policing area.

The operation aimed to address crimes typically prevalent during the festive season in Sunnyside, sending a strong message to criminals that decisive action would be taken against them. Warrant Officer Asnath Malatsi stated that the focus was on combatting crimes like carjacking, house robberies, and business robberies, leading to multiple arrests related to drug possession, possession of dangerous weapons, possession of suspected stolen property, and public drinking.

Beyond the arrests made, Brigadier Kgoadi praised the efforts of SAPS members and collaborating stakeholders. She underscored the significance of collective action in intensifying the fight against crime, particularly as criminals have shown increased aggression.

“Our commitment lies in addressing the challenges posed by aggressive criminals and ensuring the safety of the community. We will continue to take resolute action to prevent criminal activities and create a safer festive season through our crime-fighting initiatives,” said Brigadier Kgoadi.
