Tshwane Ya Tima hits affluent suburbs in the east
The Tshwane metro took decisive action against delinquent customers by disconnecting power to several defaulters in Pretoria East as part of their ongoing efforts to recover outstanding debts from major defaulters.
Acting mayor Dr. Nasiphi Moya, accompanied by a team of Tshwane technicians and the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD), conducted operations on October 7 targeting clients with high service bill arrears who had failed to meet their monthly payment obligations.
Moya emphasized their focus on the upmarket neighborhood of Waterkloof, starting with a house whose owner owed the city R559,855.
The team moved to Rigel Avenue, where a household had an outstanding amount of R1,000,993 towards the city.
Subsequently, they visited a household within a gated community on Lawley Street in Waterkloof, which owed the city R2,259,821.
The revenue collection campaigns initiated in 2021 aim to disconnect electricity supply to clients accumulating high service bills but failing to settle their monthly invoices.
Moya highlighted that despite prior warnings, the disconnected customers had not made contact with the city to arrange a payment plan.
She expressed disappointment at the lack of communication from the defaulters and stressed the importance of residents understanding that electricity theft is a criminal offense, with the metro prepared to take legal action when necessary.
Moya urged residents to refrain from illegal connections and encouraged them to engage with the municipality to explore options such as affordability programs to address outstanding debts.
She cautioned against the culture of non-payment, stating that it disrupts service delivery and emphasized the need for residents to fulfill their financial obligations to avoid service deterioration.
