Meer as ‘n tikkie nostalgie vir oudleerlinge by reünie

On the 5th of October, the bistro Vincents at Afrikaans Hoër Meisieskool buzzed with stories, anecdotes, and memories as 60 former students of the 1974 matric class gathered to celebrate their 50th reunion. The venue was adorned with fashionable blue attire and decor in the school’s colors.

Former students made the effort to travel from abroad, including Australia, the Netherlands, and England, to reunite with their schoolmates from provinces such as Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, as well as those still residing in Pretoria, to share memories and renew old friendships.

To facilitate the gathering, the organizer and convener for the historic day, Brenda Johnston (formerly Lotter), provided all former students with name tags bearing their maiden names. Johnston expressed her privilege in welcoming the former students and leading them on a tour of the grounds and corridors of the red brick buildings after an afternoon tea where precious stories and anecdotes were exchanged.

“If my count is correct, we were 166 girls in matric. How quickly the 50 years have flown by! It feels as though we were sitting on these school benches just yesterday,” expressed Johnston, reflecting the general sentiment among the former students.

For her, the school was not only a “place to learn but where we supported each other, forged close friendships that many are still as strong as when we were in school and in many cases, even stronger,” she remarked.

The school has celebrated numerous milestones in its 50 years, some of which were highlighted by the former students, including the centenary celebrations in 2020 and the consistent 100% matric pass rate.
