Designer teaches senior citizens trending styles
A designer renowned for organizing street fashion events in Mamelodi has extended his expertise to senior citizens.
Abdul Maimane (29) from Mamelodi West is the creator of the Street Cotton fashion show.
Maimane has chosen to collaborate with the Peu Entle Senior Citizens Club by imparting his fashion design skills to the elderly.
Focusing on vintage clothing, he mentioned that his interest in fashion design sparked during his school years, leading to his involvement in community initiatives through hosting street fashion displays.
Maimane conducts sessions with the elderly individuals every week from Tuesday to Thursday, from 10:30 to 11:30, to share his expertise with them.
The Peu Entle Sewing Project was initiated around August.
“The elderly exhibit remarkable learning capabilities, and notable progress has been observed among them,” stated Maimane.
“We commenced with taking measurements, and now we are engaged in the construction phase, focusing on patterns and sketches.”
Maimane, alongside other fashion designers in Mamelodi, organizes annual street fashion events in April, providing budding clothing designers and models a platform to exhibit their creations.
Onica Jele, a member of the Peu Entle Senior Citizens Club, acknowledged this as her first experience with a sewing machine.
Although she had a penchant for sewing, she typically used a needle and thread in the past.
Jele expressed that attending sewing classes with Maimane has enhanced her knowledge of fashion design, including aspects like measurements, construction, patterns, and sketches.
She mentioned discovering a newfound talent and expressed aspirations to pursue a career in fashion design after completing the training.
Dinah Nkuna also gained substantial insights into fashion design.
She emphasized the significance of accurate measurements when starting to craft garments from scratch.
Nkuna shared that while she had some familiarity with using the sewing machine, she acquired new skills previously unknown to her.
She eagerly anticipates delving into the process of learning to create a wedding dress.
Agnes Sepeng explained that the seniors club was established in 2017 to engage elderly individuals, promote fitness, and alleviate boredom.
“Peu Entle,” translating to a good seed in SeTswana, symbolizes the club’s mission of sowing positive influence within the community.
