Two Pretoria teenagers walked away with prizes at the ATKV-Toneelfinaal held at Kunstekaap in Cape Town from September 23-28.

Liza Stolz, portraying Priska in the production “Kou my vingers tot die been” from Hoërskool Eldoraigne, received the award for the most promising performance in a role.

Alexia Retief, playing Zandria in the production “Teddie et al.” from Hoërskool Zwartkop, acquired the award for best actress in a supporting role.

These two Pretoria schools, along with Hoërskool Garsfontein, were part of the top ten finalist schools that made it through the elimination rounds.

This remarkable achievement comes as over 3,000 teenagers from across South Africa participated in 187 productions at the 60th ATKV-Tienertoneelfees this year.

After nine regional festivals nationwide, the top ten productions advanced to the national final.

ATKV spokesperson Mercia Eksteen stated that Hoërskool Parel Vallei in Somerset West impressed the judges with their outstanding performance in “VIR SPOT” and was announced as the national ATKV-Tienertoneel winner.

Hoërskool Parel Vallei also secured the second place with the production “99 Luftballons.”

Curro Durbanville Hoërskool with “Mensdom” was named the third-place winner of ATKV-Tienertoneel 2024.

Gerrie Lemmer, cultural executive head at ATKV, emphasized during the opening of the ATKV-Toneelfinaal that “theater plays an indispensable role in society.”

The judges, including Jacques Bessenger, Mari Molefe van Heerden, André Lötter, Liezl de Kock, Lindsey Cele, Solomon Cupido, and Marlo Minnaar, agreed that the top 16 productions at the ATKV-Toneelfinaal displayed creative and symbiotic groundbreaking work.

They believe that the future of theater is robust with such talent and innovation.

Over 920 performers from all over South Africa also participated in the separate ATKV-Tjokkertoneelkompetisie this year, and the top six productions were invited to the second national final for tjokkers. The best production and winner of R10,000, along with the ATKV Tjokkertoneel trophy, was Laerskool De Hoop in Cape Town.
