WATCH: Business owners in Alrode unhappy with overflowing sewage
Local business owners in Alrode are expressing concern over the continuous flow of sewage on Dekenah Street, prompting demands for action. The sewage issue has raised worries about potential health risks for workers in the vicinity.
The sewage is observed to be flowing behind business establishments on the street, with the foul odor permeating the surrounding area where these businesses operate.
A worker, who chose to remain anonymous, stated, “We have been lodging complaints regarding this matter, but it has not been resolved. I had hoped that upon returning to work after my leave, the situation would have been addressed, yet it remains unresolved. With the upcoming warmer weather in spring, the odor is expected to worsen.”
The Alberton Record reached out to City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) officials, specifically from the environmental resource, waste management, water, and sanitation departments, responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy environment for residents and visitors. Queries were also directed to Alrode local ward Councillor Samantha Nair.
Response:
CoE official, Mbali Matiwane, stated, “This matter will be swiftly investigated and resolved as necessary.”
Councillor Samantha Nair remarked, “If a formal report was submitted regarding this issue, the department would have taken action. Upon reviewing all the logged service requests within my jurisdiction, I did not come across any reference numbers related to this matter. Had such information been brought to my attention, I would have promptly escalated it to the water and sanitation manager.”
