Volunteer puppy raisers needed: Help train future guide dogs

Puppy Raising Volunteer Program Overview

The puppy raising program is a volunteer initiative where participants are entrusted with a puppy from the organization at eight weeks of age. The puppy remains under the care of the raiser until it reaches approximately 16 months old.

Throughout this period, the puppy raiser is required to attend weekly training sessions at the Guide Dogs premises and various public locations. In addition to formal training sessions, raisers are encouraged to expose the puppy to different environments, with certain restrictions applicable until the puppy reaches 16 weeks of age.

Furthermore, puppy raisers may have the opportunity to accompany the marketing team to engage with the public at fundraising events, fostering socialization and public interaction for the puppy.

Upon reaching around 16 months of age, the puppy returns to the organization for a comprehensive evaluation. During this evaluation period, the puppy raiser may still have the dog at home during weekends and holidays, as dogs in formal training are typically allowed to spend weekends and holidays with their raisers.

Once the formal training is concluded, the dog is then matched with its new owner. All costs related to food and veterinary care for the puppy are covered by the organization.
