A fire incident occurred at the Pyramid substation, leading to power outages in the Rooiwal area, located north of Pretoria, in the early hours of October 2.

Concerns have been raised regarding possible sabotage, as highlighted by Themba Fosi, the former MMC for Utility Services, following his visit to the site.

Emergency services promptly responded and successfully extinguished the blaze, affecting not only the Pyramid substation but also causing outages in various areas, including Pretoria North, Wonderboom, Wolmer, and parts of Waltloo.

A spokesperson for the metro confirmed that technicians from the energy and electricity department isolated the fault and were deployed to rectify the situation.

During the inspection by Fosi, significant damage was observed, indicating deliberate interference.

Fosi noted forcible cutting of locks, breakage of doors, and severing of critical control panel cables.

He emphasized that such destructive acts are calculated attempts to undermine the metro’s infrastructure and service provision, impacting residents and destabilizing the city’s infrastructure.

Fosi expressed concerns about potential financial gains for certain contractors from the subsequent repair and reconstruction work following substation incidents.

An urgent call was made for a thorough investigation into the matter, stressing the importance of holding accountable those responsible and uncovering any collusion between contractors and possible saboteurs.

“We are committed to safeguarding Tshwane’s infrastructure and ensuring that criminal activities aimed at profiting from its destruction are not tolerated.”

Residents are advised to stay updated through official channels as repair operations progress, with the metro promising to provide regular updates on the restoration of power to affected customers.
