An absurdist legal drama that follows the clandestine testing of an experimental aggression-reducing drug on inmates.” This attempt to cure or fix humanity backfires drastically on the individuals pulling the strings” SABCNew (2016) : Fringe, Joburg theatre
“The piece sounds like something a beat poet wrote while on an acid trip” NAF (2014) : Rhodes University
The legal drama turned musical’s episodic nature; told through a series of court trials that reveal only the slightest hint of what has happened in the past leaves it’s audience in the heart of these convicts’ stories. So wherein lies the real culprit? An unjust system of oppression or those who learn to bend it and revolt against it? What is the antidote for an I’ll society? Underscored by a 5 piece live band on stage, the Antidote musical’s central themes of crime & oppression ring loudly and can be seen clearly through the depiction of physical & psychological oppression, as inmates are reduced to inhumane living conditions, violence & brutality and covert human medical experimentation.
The audience becomes part of the performance as they are swallowed into the drama as members of the jury on trail to make their judgement.
