Marais Viljoen High learners, teachers brave snowy weather for annual school trip
Despite facing challenges, Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High School’s annual trip to the ATKV Drakensville was a success this year. Heavy snowfall resulted in the school’s principal, Dr Johlet Krause, along with staff and learners, becoming stranded approximately 19km from ATKV Drakensville.
Due to the adverse weather conditions, they were unable to proceed and had to spend the night on the buses, awaiting improved conditions. Arrangements were made for the group to walk to The Border Post Backpacker Lodge.
ATKV Drakensville played a significant role in coordinating the sheltering of learners and staff at the lodge, ensuring that food and blankets were provided to everyone during the time they were stranded.
The Okhahlamba Local Municipality, Snow Report SA, the local community, and farmers all contributed to assisting. A farmer even dispatched a helicopter to air-drop blankets, ensuring that the group remained warm in the freezing weather.
By around 14:00, the snowfall had ceased, and efforts were underway to clear the roads, enabling the learners and teachers to resume their journey to ATKV Drakensville.
Their bus finally arrived at 16:30. Subsequently, they were able to enjoy hot showers, hot meals, and comfortable beds. The following Sunday morning, the group gathered for a service in the ATKV chapel. During their time in the snow, some learners and staff took photos and built snowmen.
The trip showcased the strength and resilience of the learners and staff, fostering a lasting bond among everyone. It was an experience filled with valuable lessons and remarkable endurance, highlighting the strength of everyone in the face of adversity.
This annual trip not only provides an opportunity for relaxation but also helps in grooming future leaders by enhancing their collaborative skills and preparing them for the academic challenges ahead.
