Water tankers provide water relief to east residents

The Tshwane metro has strategically positioned water tankers to provide water to parts of Pretoria East following a sudden water outage affecting several areas. While some areas have had their water supply restored, the estimated time for full restoration in other areas remains uncertain.

The water outage was triggered by a power trip at Rand Water’s Mapleton Booster Pumping Station in Ekurhuleni, as reported on Saturday, September 28.

Relief efforts have been made by Ward 91 councillor Henning Viljoen, who mentioned that water tankers have been deployed to assist residents. However, the complete restoration timeline is still unknown.

Viljoen explained that the Mapleton system has been partially restored, although efforts to operate at full capacity were disrupted by another power trip. Pumping resumed at 630 ML at 22:00 the previous night, with the supply shared between the City of Tshwane and the City of Ekurhuleni.

It was mentioned that the Bronberg supply has been temporarily halted to facilitate the replenishment of the main reservoirs. The metro is awaiting confirmation on the allocation of the 630 ML designated for the Tshwane metro.

Rand Water confirmed that the Mapleton station is currently pumping at 80%, while investigations are ongoing to ascertain the root cause of the low power supply. Continuous updates on the matter will be provided by Rand Water.

Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo stated that water tankers have been arranged to supply water to affected areas, including Mamelodi, Tyger Valley, Doornkloof Agricultural Holdings, Mooikloof Ridge, Six Fountains, Shere, and Hazeldean.

The metro listed the areas where water tankers have been placed:

– Bordeaux Street, Garsfontein at Great Dane Park.

– Hoërskool Garsfontein drop-off Rolina Street

– Isie Smuts Street, corner of Keeshond or Nesser streets
