Inquest opened as Moot guard found dead
An inquest has been opened at Villieria police after a Moot patrol officer was found dead.
The Moot community is grieving the loss of a dedicated CPF volunteer, John ‘Dakar’ Dreyer who was found dead on Friday morning.
Ancelize van der Kooi, spokesperson for Kilner Park Security (KPS), and close friend of Dreyer said that the community had lost a hero.
Dreyer was known widely in the community as someone well-connected to the many people he passionately cared for.
Tshwane SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said that an inquest has been opened at Villieria SAPS.
He said that at about 04:00 on Friday, Pro Shield security received a call about an unknown man lying in the road.
“On arrival, they immediately started to do CPR and EMS was called to the scene.”
Dreyer was declared deceased.
He said that the cause of death was still unknown and that there was no visible injury, but said that a post-mortem would be done early in the week.
Dreyer’s bicycle, which he was known for doing midnight patrols with, was stolen in the incident.
Villieria CPF chairperson Susan Andrews said that he had died while on patrol, but that the circumstances surrounding his death were still unknown.
“We received a call on Friday that there was a man lying in the road at Fry and Lawson streets.”
She said that emergency and security services were deployed to the scene.
“Dakar was known widely in the community, and we have suffered a great loss.”
She said that a case had been opened at Villieria SAPS, and urged community members not to speculate about the circumstances surrounding his death while the inquest was ongoing.
She said that a memorial patrol drive was being held on Friday, October 4 at the corner of Nico Smith Street and Codonia Avenue from 17:00.
Neighbouring Sinoville CPF described Dreyer as a legend.
“[Dreyer] was an example of heroism, selfless sacrifice, unquestionable commitment and a love and passion for our communities and justice.
“He has set an example that cannot be surpassed.”
Warrant Officer Marinda Austin from Villieria SAPS said that Dreyer was a light of hope against crime.
“A crime fighter like John ‘Dakar’ Dreyer enhanced community safety and fostered collaborations between law enforcement and the community, leading to a more secure environment.
His courage, compassion, and commitment were inspiring to all. His selfless efforts and bravery in the face of danger made a profound impact on the community,” Austin said.
“His spirit will live in the hearts of those who he touched daily.
