Naomi Steenkamp, Mrs Middelburg 2023 and Mrs Nkangala International Village 2024, has organized a Barefoot for Cancer Fun Walk scheduled to take place at Tarries Park this Saturday. This event aligns with the Cancer Association of South Africa’s (CANSA) Active initiative, with Steenkamp aiming to raise awareness during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

Steenkamp conveyed to the Middelburg Observer, “The barefoot walk symbolizes the pain and resilience of individuals facing a cancer diagnosis, where completing the walk represents the arduous journey endured by those courageous individuals battling cancer.”

While the walk is motivated by Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Steenkamp has extended an invitation to all individuals impacted by cancer to participate and feel supported at the event.

Registration is scheduled from 06:20 to 07:00, and the walk will commence at 07:15. A participation fee of R50 per person is required for the 4.5km Fun Walk. Children below the age of five can enter for free, and leashed and sociable dogs are also welcome to join.

It is essential to note that all dogs must be kept on a leash throughout the event. The attire guideline is simple – wear something pink, with the option to go barefoot.

CANSA will be providing gift prizes for the top three finishers in both the men’s and women’s categories. Various stalls offering refreshments like cool drinks, coffee, breakfast, and more will be present.

Statistics from CANSA reveal that “approximately 19.4 million women aged 15 years and older are at risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer – the most prevalent cancer affecting women in South Africa.” Steenkamp urges the public to donate a new or gently used sports bra that will be distributed to underprivileged girls.

CANSA merchandise will be available for purchase at the event. For those interested in contributing a sports bra, contact Steenkamp at 064 968 5665 to arrange for drop-off or collection. Furthermore, for additional details, inquiries, or registrations, individuals can reach out to her directly.
