Heritage Day games unite community with sports and tradition
The Heritage Day festivities on September 24 at the Klipriviersberg Recreation Centre in Kibler Park marked a successful and enjoyable celebration of the holiday.
Attendees engaged in traditional games such as diketo and morabaraba, adding a cultural touch to the event.
The event also featured a football tournament, a rugby knockout competition, and classic board games like checkers, providing entertainment for all.
Organized by Clr Matsobane Sekhu of Ward 125 in the City of Johannesburg, the tournament received tremendous support from local businesses, including Addendorf Machinery Mart, Southgate Value Mart, Carmi Hatters, and others, which made the event possible.
Sekhu emphasized the importance of instilling in children an appreciation for sports as a crucial aspect of South African heritage. Sports have historically played a unifying role in the country, fostering patriotism and community spirit. The Heritage Day games offered families a chance to come together and celebrate their pride as South Africans.
The primary audience for the event was children from the local community, with special participation from underprivileged youth residing in the informal settlements near Carltonville during the rugby tournament.
Alveda Pros FC, a team formed shortly before the event, emerged victorious as the football tournament champions, showcasing the spirit of unity and competition.
