Two busted for illegal dumping in Centurion

AfriForum Centurion neighbourhood watch members caught two individuals illegally dumping near the Jan Street substation in Eldoraigne on Heritage Day.

According to Andre de Bruyn, chairperson of the AfriForum Centurion branch, the suspects were caught on a camera system installed to monitor movement in the area.

“We had an intelligence network installed around the Jan Street substation in Eldoraigne two weeks ago, paid for by membership contributions from the community,” De Bruyn told Rekord.

He said that a white Opel Corsa bakkie was spotted at the site loaded with garden refuse at about 13:15 on Tuesday.

Within a few seconds, the road was blocked and the culprits were unable to escape.

The neighbourhood watch called for TMPD support.

Once they arrived, De Bruyn said that the culprits’ vehicle was impounded because it was without a licence disk and allegedly had false number plates while the driver couldn’t produce a licence.

The driver was fined R5 000.

“We can no longer sit back. We have to take responsibility for our neighbourhoods,” said De Bruyn. He also thanked the Metro Police officers for their swift response.

De Bruyn said the network monitoring all movement in and out of the area was formed especially to bring down cable theft which has been rife in the last few years.

He said that in the past, the area has suffered power outages that last for days because of cable theft, costing the city millions over the years.

He said that all video footage captured in the area “is sent to the AfriForum Centurion NHW within seconds”.

“We want informal and illegal dumping companies to take note, soon all the dumping sites we know of will be under surveillance. Stop doing this!”

He also urged residents to stop using informal waste removal businesses.

“If you pay R200 a load, it is guaranteed it will end up next to our roads, in our graveyards, or rivers.

“We will catch you, we cannot live like pigs in our own suburbs!”

He said that anyone willing to assist their community was welcome to contact them.
