Residents urged to use the Pretoria North library, metro welcomes donations

Pretoria North residents are encouraged to use the Pretoria North library in Burger Street.

Ward 2 councillor Quentin Meyer recently visited the library, focusing on revitalising this crucial hub of knowledge and urged residents, especially the youth to fully utilise the library’s offerings.

“As I drive around this ward, I have noticed most of the young people hanging out in corners doing nothing productive.

“By visiting the library and utilising its resources, community members can help demonstrate the demand for continued investment and improvements,” said Meyer.

Meyer said local sponsorship and partnerships can also play a vital role in addressing the library’s infrastructure challenges.

He emphasised the importance of the library for personal growth and education.

“The library boasts a wide range of materials to support both learning and personal interests and students can take advantage of the internet to conduct research and complete assignments.

“The library has a peaceful atmosphere conducive to focused learning and a space that invites community members to visit and engage.”

The library is open to the public from Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 16:50 and closed on weekends.

Meyer added that even though the library is open for the public to use, the community must lend a helping hand in upgrading the infrastructure.

“We need assistance from a company that can help us eliminate termites and other issues such as bathroom repairs.”

Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the metro is responsible for upgrades to all 60 of its libraries, however, due to budget constraints, it’s difficult to cover all the required upgrades.

Mashigo said pest control is part of municipal maintenance services for library facilities.

“Currently, the metro doesn’t have any partnership with private companies or organisations regarding Information Communication Technology (ICT) equipment donations.

“However, potential sponsors/donors are welcome to approach the metro with a proposal for consideration and approval if possible,” said Mashigo.

He said a procedure for reporting maintenance issues is that a job order is issued after a maintenance request is reported.

“Organisations that would like to collaborate with the metro on initiatives that will support and enhance library services are welcome to approach the office of the Group Head: Community and Social Development Department on 012 358 1389.”
