Outcome of disciplinary hearing against Tshwane bus drivers pending

An outcome of a recently held disciplinary hearing is still pending for the 48 Tshwane bus drivers charged for misconduct, according to Tshwane metro.

The Tshwane metro said it would not tolerate any form of misconduct by employees.
The bus drivers underwent a disciplinary hearing on September 16 -18.

The metro has instituted these disciplinary hearing proceedings for the drivers who allegedly participated in an illegal strike on May 7 and 8.

Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said tough actions will be taken against those who involved themselves in acts of misconduct.

He said the disciplinary hearing was currently ongoing.

According to Mashigo, employees belonging to the labour union Samwu participated in the illegal strike causing the city not to provide bus services to residents during the period of the strike.

Mashigo said in May, Samwu (South African Municipal Workers Union) bus drivers abandoned their shifts without notifying management nor giving specific reasons for their actions.

“The employees were reported to have suddenly demanded to see the city manager before downing their tools.”

At the time, the city had not received any formal grievance from the protesting employees.

Employees affiliated with the labour movement Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (Imatu) however honoured some of their shifts to ensure commuters weren’t severely impacted.

This prompted the metro to institute a disciplinary committee on August 2.

However, they did not show up for work despite being informed by their trade union representative that the hearing had been rescheduled to August 19.

The metro announced in a statement that the drivers will face additional charges for their unauthorised absence following their recent involvement in an illegal and unprotected strike.
