ActionSA President Herman Mashaba announced on Saturday in Atteridgeville that his party is exiting the Tshwane coalition. The party has been part of the coalition government since 2021.

Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink is facing his third motion of no confidence on the 26th of September.

Due to procedural and legal reasons, no voting took place on the previous two motions in July and August.

“We must cut ties with this coalition government in Tshwane,” said Mashaba while addressing supporters at the Saulsville Arena on Saturday.

He mentioned that the election results in May were a result of ActionSA’s commitment to the Multiparty Charter.

The decision to leave the coalition was made by the ActionSA Senate on Friday, due to the post-election reality and “the many cases of mismanagement observed by us in Tshwane.”

“We will never make such serious decisions haphazardly, not to satisfy someone’s ego or to offend someone. Especially when there is already a government in place that is working for the people, Tshwane, in this case,” he said in a statement on Monday.

Mashaba mentioned that his party has always spoken against unnecessary changes to functioning governments.

“As far as the Tshwane metro is concerned, we want both the media and Tshwane residents to give us a little more time to consult the various possible coalition partners for the best outcome,” said Mashaba.

An agreement was reached on December 15, 2021, between the DA, ActionSA, FF+, ACDP, IFP, and COPE, which included strategic priorities on internal employment, inner-city renewal, and immigration, forming the basis for a coalition government in Tshwane.

ANC councilor Frans Boshielo, in his motivation for the most recent motion of no confidence, mentioned that the motion was brought due to the metro’s debt of R6 billion to Eskom and R15 million to Rand Water. This also includes a delay in pension fund payments, unnecessary spending on new appointments, and late submission of five quarterly audit committee reports.

DA Tshwane spokesperson Kwena Moloto mentioned last week that the party is disappointed by ActionSA, noting the party’s refusal to work with the coalition despite multiple attempts to persuade them.

“ActionSA treated its Tshwane coalition partners with sheer contempt,” said Moloto.

“It is clear that ActionSA intends to vote for a motion of no confidence.”

Moloto stated that Mashaba clearly expressed his preference for a coalition with the EFF.

The FF Plus affirmed its commitment to the Tshwane coalition and insisted that ActionSA acknowledge the progress made by the current government and prevent the destabilization of the city.

FF Plus Councilor Grandi Theunissen appealed for cooperation and stability to address the metro’s challenges.

“Although the Tshwane metro’s problems will not be solved overnight, it is important to note that the coalition’s efforts have already yielded certain positive results,” he said.

“The various parties have worked hard since the coalition took over the metro to steer it through challenging times for the benefit of all its residents.

“The FF Plus calls on all its coalition partners, especially ActionSA, to stand together, create the necessary stability, and demonstrate their commitment to future work.”
