Get to know your new Miss SA
This past weekend, South Africa welcomed a new queen to take over from Natasha Joubert. Mia le Roux was recently crowned Miss South Africa 2024. Her victory is particularly significant as she was diagnosed with profound hearing loss and received a cochlear implant to assist with her hearing at the age of one.
Although Mia’s triumph may seem like an underdog story, she has demonstrated that she is fully capable of embracing her new role, with inclusion being at the forefront of her agenda.
As she becomes a more familiar presence on our screens and in our lives, here are some interesting facts about South Africa’s newest ambassador that you might not know:
Sign language is her first language
As someone with hearing loss, Mia found it essential to learn sign language, which became her primary mode of communication. While it is more common for a person’s first language to be their mother tongue, this is not unusual for individuals with hearing challenges.
Born in Free State, raised in the Western Cape
Mia was born in Sasolburg, a city in the Free State located approximately an hour from Johannesburg. She later moved to Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape, where she was raised.
Passion for pageants
Although this was her first time entering Miss South Africa, Mia is no stranger to the world of pageantry. She has held several titles, starting in high school when she won ‘Miss Struisie’ and ‘Miss Garden Route’. She also participated in Miss Deaf South Africa, where she made it to the top five.
Marketing professional
Before entering the Miss South Africa competition, the 28-year-old worked as a marketing manager and was pursuing a BCom in marketing at the University of South Africa. She also worked part-time as a model, represented by Ice Models in Cape Town.
Love life
Although the duration of their relationship is not specified, Mia is in a relationship with fellow model Luke Tenoever. The couple frequently shares their affection for each other on Instagram.
