tristan munzJohannesburg – Al Jama-ah has confidently secured the future of its councillor, Kabelo Gwamanda, as the Mayor of Johannesburg after joining the African National Congress’s (ANC) Government of National Unity (GNU).
On Friday, Al Jama-ah officially became the tenth party to join the GNU, despite previously stating its reluctance to align with any coalition involving the Democratic Alliance (DA). This strategic move is set to influence governance at national, provincial, and local levels.
The formation of the GNU has already started reshaping local government landscapes. Mxolisi Kaunda, the former Ethekwini Mayor, was the first notable casualty of this new political alliance, losing his position earlier this month. Similarly, in Ekurhuleni, the ANC removed Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) caucus leader Nkululeko Dunga from the mayoral committee, signaling a shift away from reliance on the EFF to form a majority government in the metro.
Ganief Hendricks, leader of Al Jama-ah, expressed confidence in the stability of Gwamanda’s position, citing assurances received from the ANC. “The bilateral relationships we have built up historically over the last 10 years will now be strengthened by the fact that we are part of the political assembly (GNU). In that political assembly, it will be on merit. So if Gwamanda is doing a good job and that is brought before a panel, surely they will keep him in power,” Hendricks stated.
Hendricks also mentioned that the party has conducted a thorough review of Gwamanda’s first year as Johannesburg Mayor and is satisfied with his performance to date. This endorsement highlights the party’s commitment to maintaining stability and effective governance in Johannesburg under Gwamanda’s leadership.
By joining the GNU, Al Jama-ah not only strengthens its political alliances but also ensures that Johannesburg’s leadership remains steady under the capable hands of Kabelo Gwamanda. This strategic alignment demonstrates the party’s adaptability and dedication to fostering robust governance across all levels of government.
