Oscar must tell the truth - Reeva’s dad

Tania Koen, the attorney representing Reeva Steenkamp’s parents, June and Berry, spoke about their emotions as they prepared to attend Oscar Pistorius’ parole hearing on Friday, 31 March. As reported by SNL24, the Atteridgeville Correctional Centre in Tshwane held the hearing where the court denied Pistorius’ bid for release on parole. Koen accompanied June to the hearing. While Berry did not attend, Koen described his victim-impact statement as “extremely emotional.”

Koen explained that the parole hearing was “unpleasant” for Reeva’s parents, especially for June, who was courageous to attend. Koen commanded June for her bravery and said it took a considerable amount of gut and courage for her to be there. The parole board spoke to June and Pistorius separately, and Koen noted that June did not believe Pistorius was rehabilitated. She felt he had not told the truth, and June and Berry submitted that he must not obtain a release on parole.

Correctional Services spokesman, Sinabakho Nxumalo, confirmed the parole board’s decision to reject Pistorius’ application for parole, explaining that he had not completed his minimum detention period set by the Supreme Court of Appeal. Nxumalo said that the parole board would grant Pistorius another profile for August. However, he would remain behind bars until then for his parole reapplication.
