JDA Celebrates Completion of Melville Street Upgrades
In Melville, Region F, an active and intensified main road is unfolding through the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), the Melville Activity Street Public Environment Upgrades (PEUs). One of the neighbourhoods known for its youthful population has become even more lively and attractive with The Melville Precinct.
According to the City of Johannesburg, Melville is a trendy and partly bohemian suburb located just a stone’s throw away from the University of Johannesburg in Auckland Park. These are some of the improvements that are part of the Melville Auckland Park Precinct, meant to beautify the area. The project aims to enhance foot usage within and around the Melville Precinct on Main Street between Kingsway and 6th Avenues.
Some of the urban design involved some transformation, such as spot removal and beautification of some features along Main Road, making it more pleasing to the eyes of the people inside and outside Boksburg and investors. The project consisted of the finalisation of sidewalks, the greening of sidewalks, the green central median or ‘island’ in the Main Road, and the enhancement of other public areas, especially in terms of aesthetics like paving and lighting.

“The safety of pedestrians has specifically been an issue along Main Road. Many students use this street to navigate the precinct to access retail, business, residential, and office spaces,” said Siyabonga Genu, JDA’s Executive Manager: Project Implementation.
“The Melville project aligns with the City’s commitment to creating liveable, sustainable urban environments, where residents can navigate safely and efficiently,” he added.
The upgrades also involved improving infrastructure functionality through bulk infrastructure upgrades. These enhancements will boost the area’s attractiveness and functionality, benefiting locals and visitors.
