Gauteng Police Fatally Shoot Three Suspected Members of Blue-Light Gang on N3

The SA Police Service in Gauteng traded gunfire with suspects of the infamous blue-light gang during the night of Sunday, resulting in three deaths. According to the provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili, a gang had been distressing drivers on the N3 between the towns of Villiers and Heidelberg. IOL reports the confrontation was after they had received intelligence on the gang’s activities, and through the multidisciplinary team, the police could trace the gang.

As mentioned by Muridili, the group of suspects driving the white Toyota Hilux with its blue lights installed were on the N3 highway at Grootvlei in Mpumalanga. When the police arrived at the scene, the suspects began to run away, and the car was chased by police along the highway, which was to Zonkizizwe, Ekurhuleni. Confronting the armed suspects with their automatic weapons, the officers returned fire, resulting in fatal shots from the police team on three of the suspects; another managed to escape by foot.

During the execution, police took away illegally possessed firearms, ammo, blue lights, and the suspects’ car. Muridili said that it is their mission to bring wrongdoers to justice. The SAPS crime scene management team examined the crime scene for evidence, and the vehicle was taken for due process.

The incident followed up on the online video circulating of the blue-light gang’s operations, such as hijackings and robberies posted on social media along the N3. A while ago, a particular couple narrated to the police a story of being picked by the gang inside Heidelberg and Vosloorus and then being stabbed and robbed. And somewhat later, a doctor on his way from Newcastle to Johannesburg got attacked by the gang. Gang vehicles usually have three members who pose as police officers and two others dressed as civilians who approach motorists, instilling fear based on this trust.
