Cable theft

Cable theft has left the Mamelodi Old Age Home in the Ikageng area without electricity for nearly a month, leaving its elderly residents in the dark, unsure when power will be restored.

Motsamai Motlhaolwa, the Gauteng Province Department of Social Development spokesperson, confirmed the theft according to the acting manager of the home. This raised some fears over the safety and welfare of the residents.

Motlhaolwa confirmed that despite the lack of electricity, the staff is concertedly working to provide good care for old people. Despite challenges, old seniors are being provided with regular meals and baths.

Walter Mabaso, a neighbour who referred to the issues, stated that old residents have been using candles for light at midnight, which puts their lives at risk.

Mabaso underlined the urgency of the intervention, particularly as winter chills approach, highlighting the necessity of keeping older citizens warm.

According to the statements, efforts toward the centre manager’s engagement have faced postponements and uncertainties concerning the actions taken to solve the problem.

Concerns about the general conditions of the home have also been raised, including complaints about inadequate maintenance, a lack of information regarding donations received, and a deficiency of support from both the management and the community.

Mamelodi Concerned Residents’ Association has asked for immediate action to improve the living conditions of elderly individuals. The person in charge ought to be accountable, and the community has to participate in making elderly persons feel good.

The more time passes, the more pressure authorities and stakeholders feel to provide an immediate response to assist the elderly residents and resolve their problems at the Mamelodi Old Age Home.
