Ekurhuleni has halted the decision to close pools on weekends and holidays. This decision came after media organisations like the Boksburg Advertiser scrutinised the plan and sought clarification from the CoE communications office. According to metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, management reconsidered the plan and opted to withdraw it, although no specific reasons were provided for the reversal.

However, insider sources suggest that the decision was driven by cost-saving measures, particularly regarding staff overtime payments. Cheryl Knight, president of Eastern Gauteng Aquatics, expressed concern over the initial decision, highlighting the importance of public pools for community members, especially during the summer months. While the decision wouldn’t have affected major swimming galas, Knight emphasised the impact on individuals who rely on weekend pool access for recreation and training.

Despite maintenance issues leading to sporadic closures, public pools remain vital community assets. The Advertiser proposed alternative scheduling, but Knight noted that many pools already close for cleaning on Sundays and Mondays, making weekday closures less practical. As per the metro’s schedule, most community pools operate from Tuesday to Saturday, with limited hours on Sundays and public holidays.
