Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng affirmed the validity and admissibility of confessions from two of the five accused in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial. Despite claims of coercion, the court determined that both defendants were of sound mind when confessing to their roles in the crime, as per IOL.

This ruling comes after a prolonged trial-within-a-trial, during which Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi and Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya contested police pressure as the cause of their confessions. However, Judge Mokgoatlheng maintained that the confessions were voluntary and under coercion, bolstering the prosecution’s case. Legal experts emphasize the significance of admissible confessions in strengthening the State’s position, potentially leading to murder convictions. However, they underscore the importance of other evidence.

Meanwhile, the trial continues for all five accused, including Ntanzi and Sibiya, alongside Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Ziphozonke Maphisa, and Fisokuhle Nkani Ntuli. Meyiwa’s tragic murder in 2014 while visiting his girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo, deeply affected the nation. Despite this ruling, the case’s complexity persists, with its outcome anticipated to have far-reaching consequences.
