Verdict Anticipated in Trial of Alleged Joburg Serial Killer of Sex Workers
In the High Court sitting in Palm Ridge on Wednesday morning, judgment is anticipated in the trial of Joburg sex worker killer Sifiso Mkhwanazi. Mkhwanazi has confessed to the killings of six sex workers, whose bodies he concealed in Johannesburg between April and October 2022. Despite his admission, Mkhwanazi denies planning the murders or committing rape, according to Jacaranda FM.

While he successfully obtained a discharge for one count of rape from a 2021 case, he still faces six other counts of rape and charges of premeditated murder related to the discovery of the women’s decomposed bodies in 2022. The prosecution argues that Mkhwanazi deliberately targeted his victims, sexually assaulted them, and then strangled them before hiding their bodies near his father’s car repair workshop in Joburg.
Mkhwanazi claims the killings were impulsive, sparked by anger over a false rape accusation against him, as the women demanded more money for their services. Testimony from Mkhwanazi’s father, a witness for the state, led to the admission of a confession made by the accused during a trial-within-a-trial. Three of Mkhwanazi’s alleged victims remain unidentified.
