Gauteng Educator Arrested for Alleged Drug Possession on School Grounds
A Gauteng teacher in Ekurhuleni has been arrested after being found with drugs. Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, expressed deep concern over the incident. Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said someone discovered the teacher with the contraband on Valentine’s Day at the Thoko Thaba Secondary School in Thokoza. Afterwards, the school called the police to make the arrest. The educator appeared in court on Thursday, February 15. Per IOL, Mabona noted that MEC Chiloane is troubled by the school management team’s delayed reporting of the incident. This delay lead to a community protest on Wednesday, February 21.
The provincial Department of Education initiated an investigation. The teacher was removed from the school. MEC Chiloane has appealed to the community to allow the department and the police to conduct a thorough investigation. Expressing disappointment over the incident, Chiloane emphasised the department’s condemnation of such behaviour and assured it would take appropriate action.
In other news on Monday, MEC Chiloane visited Primrose Primary School in Germiston, addressing learners after a Grade 6 boy, aged 13, allegedly shot the school principal, prompting the injured principal’s hospitalisation. Describing the incident as unfortunate, the provincial Department of Education urged learners always to respect teaching staff and school management. MEC Chiloane highlighted the importance of respecting teachers and school principals, underscoring their role as parental figures within the school community.
