Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane Delivers Stern Message on Teacher Respect Amidst School Shooting Incident
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane delivered a stern message to learners at Primrose Primary School in Germiston during his visit on Monday, emphasising the importance of respect for teachers and school management. According to IOL, Chiloane’s visit follows the unfortunate incident where a Grade 6 learner allegedly shot the school principal, an incident that shocked the province.
Addressing the students directly, Chiloane stressed the need to honour and respect their educators at all times, highlighting the critical role teachers play as surrogate parents in the school environment. He underscored the gravity of the situation, expressing concern over the breakdown of respect within the school community and its potential implications.

The MEC assured learners and staff safety within the school premises and indicated readiness to bolster security measures if necessary. The wounded principal, identified only as Mr. Selepe, continues to recover in the hospital, with his return to school pending his recovery.
Chiloane expressed hope for significant legal consequences for the learner’s parents, underlining the importance of parental responsibility in preventing such incidents. Additionally, the MEC engaged with school management and the governing body to assess ongoing support needs.
The Gauteng education department has deployed a psycho-social support team to assist the school in coping. The teenage suspect is in custody and will face attempted murder charges in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court.
