SAHRC and CRL Commission Set to Release Reports on July Unrest

The SAHRC* and the Commission for the CRL Commission** will jointly present their investigative findings on the July unrest reports in Durban on Monday.

As per Jacaranda FM, the reports focus on the issues investigated during the violent looting in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng in July 2021. The imprisonment of former President Jacob Zuma initiated the unrest. The incident had profound consequences. 400 people died in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. There were also substantial economic losses amounting to billions of rands.

The SAHRC conducted a series of hearings examining specific issues in response to the unprecedented violence. Simultaneously, the CRL Rights Commission facilitated investigative hearings where various stakeholders and affected parties presented their reports and evidence.

“Both the South African Human Rights Commission and the CRL Rights Commission have since completed their reports with findings and recommendations and plan to publicly launch the two reports, together,” affirmed SAHRC spokesperson Wisani Baloyi. The unveiling of these reports is a significant step towards understanding the events surrounding the July unrest reports and determining measures for preventing such incidents.
