Du Plessis Sets Sights on UFC Title Glory

Dricus du Plessis is vying for UFC title glory. He will face Sean Strickland for the middleweight championship in the main event of UFC 297 at the Scotiabank Arena in Ontario, Canada. According to Supersport, the bout will occur on Sunday morning.

With a record of 28-5, Strickland secured the middleweight strap with a significant upset against Israel Adesanya in September last year, marking his third successive win and ninth victory in his previous 11 Octagon appearances.

Du Plessis, boasting an impressive 20-2 record, remains undefeated in the UFC since his debut in October 2020, clinching six consecutive wins and earning the top contender spot in the division. His last victory was a TKO of Robert Whittaker in July 2023.

A scuffle between the two fighters in the stands during UFC 296 in Las Vegas last month intensified the match. Du Plessis is confident that the mental advantage he gained during the altercation will play a crucial role in the bout.

Du Plessis said, “I can’t believe how easy it was to mentally trigger him. I thought Sean Strickland, he’s just bashing everybody around, about everything on everybody, and one little sentence and the man loses his mind. Shows you how easily mentally he’ll be broken.”

UFC 297 won’t only showcase the middleweight championship; the main card will also feature a clash for the vacant women’s bantamweight belt between Raquel Pennington (15-8) and Mayra Bueno Silva (10-2-1, 1 NC). Silva, coming off a No Contest result in her last fight, believes Pennington’s reluctance to fight will make her an easy target.

Other exciting matchups on the main card include:

• A welterweight clash between Neil Magny and Mike Malott.
• A middleweight bout between Chris Curtis and Marc-Andre Barriault.
• A featherweight opener with Arnold Allen facing Movsar Evloev.
