The City of Joburg has officially initiated R196 million repair work at Lillian Ngoyi Street (formerly Bree Street) in the aftermath of a gas explosion in July last year. According to IOL, the rehabilitation covers various aspects such as roadworks, stormwater and services infrastructure, and electrical, mechanical, and structural works. The project will likely conclude by December 15, 2024. Durapi Consulting secured the tender for the project, with Step Up Engineering as the appointed contractor, as announced by the CoJ.

City of Joburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda provided an update outlining the repair process for the bustling roadway. The appointed contractor will excavate to remove rubble and damaged infrastructure, including demolishing and removing service tunnels. Gwamanda emphasised constructing safer structures to minimise the risk of similar incidents in the future.

The gas explosion in July last year, which led to this extensive repair project, resulted in at least one fatality and 48 injuries in the Joburg city centre. Residents in the vicinity reported breathing problems due to the apparent gas smell. Subsequent investigations identified methane gas as the cause of the explosion.
