South Africa’s ‘Genocide’ Case Against Israel Seen as Political Game Changer by Expert

South Africa’s genocide case against Israel in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is seen as a significant political game changer due to allegations of genocidal acts in Gaza.

Launched in December, the application contends that Israel’s actions warrant urgent suspension of military operations in Gaza, a claim rejected by Israel with solid disapproval, as reported by Jacaranda FM.

Scheduled for Thursday and Friday, the ICJ hearing has prompted countries to take sides in the Israel-Hamas conflict, as Professor Anthoni Van Nieuwkerk from the Wits School of Governance noted.

Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Ronald Lamola leads the South African delegation, expressing confidence in a strong case against Israel’s alleged genocide in Gaza.

Accompanying Lamola are officials, including Director General Phindile Baleni, Zane Dangor from the Department of International Relations and Co-operation, and Advocate Doctor Mashabane from the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development.

Special Advisor to President Cyril Ramaphosa, Advocate Nokukhanya Jele, is part of the delegation, joined by former UK opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn at the ICJ.

Amid this, Israel accuses South Africa of criminal complicity in atrocities committed by Hamas, escalating tensions surrounding the Gaza war.

The conflict, initiated by an October 7 attack by Hamas, has led to casualties on both sides, with South Africa’s allegations shaping global diplomatic relations as the ICJ gears up for a pivotal role in addressing the contentious issue.
