‘Criminals Continue to Prevail,’ Says Family of Sosh Shooting Victim

The hope for justice in the tragic case of Phomolang Molakapatlo, a victim of the Jukulyn mass shooting, is diminishing, according to the grieving family. As three suspects implicated in the New Year’s Day killings anticipate their court appearance on Friday, the family’s confidence in the justice system has been shaken. As per Jacaranda FM, An additional suspect was released on Tuesday due to procedural lapses by the police, as the Soshanguve Magistrate’s Court found the failure to bring him before the court within the mandated 48 hours. The man, clad in a blood-stained white vest, blue pants, and flip-flops, was granted freedom amid allegations of police assault, triggering gasps from the public gallery.

Zingisile Jonga, Phomolang Molakapatlo’s uncle, expressed the family’s disappointment in the justice system: “Our justice system keeps on failing us.” Despite expectations that authorities would mobilise their best officials for the case, doubts surfaced after Tuesday’s court proceedings. Jonga likened the situation to a chess game, lamenting, “Criminals are always winning.”

Phomolang Molakapatlo is one of the four victims who lost their lives in a hail of bullets shortly after welcoming the new year. Koketso, her devastated sister, shared the anguish of losing their mother in the same manner and area in the past. She described the pain of seeing her sister in the mortuary and criticised Jukulyn as a “horrible place to live” due to the frequent burials of residents.

As the family grapples with the loss and seeks justice, another suspect, previously hospitalised on Monday night, is expected to join Sipho Kgomo and Tshepo Mosemeni in court on Friday to face charges related to the tragic events of New Year’s Day.
