ACSA Expresses Regret Over Tampered Baggage Incident and Stolen Possessions at OR Tambo

ACSA regrets the tampered baggage incident and stolen possessions at OR Tambo International Airport. Confirming its awareness of the recent incident, the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) acknowledges and regrets tampering with a passenger’s baggage, leading to stolen possessions.

Jabulani Khambule, the ACSA regional general manager, ensures active cooperation with the relevant airline and baggage handling company for a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice. Khambule underscores a zero-tolerance approach to criminality, warning that any illegal behaviour by airport staff, whether directly employed or contracted, will result in severe consequences.

While ACSA clarifies it’s not responsible for baggage handling, the organisation commits to assisting investigations by providing relevant evidence, such as video footage. Passengers are urged to report incidents of tampering and pilfering directly to their respective airlines.

Addressing a circulating video about baggage pilfering at OR Tambo International Airport, Khambule clarifies it’s from four years ago, and the involved employee was prosecuted and dismissed then. ACSA remains dedicated to deterring and combating fraud, corruption, dishonesty, and theft, having recently adopted an integrated, multi-agency safety and security approach to enhance airport and aviation security across its network.
