Newly Trained SAPS Officers Await Address from the President

President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver a keynote address on Thursday at a South African Police Service (SAPS) passing-out parade, certifying 1,400 newly trained SAPS officers ready for the fight against crime. According to SANews, the parade will unfold at the South African National Defence Force’s 3 South African Infantry Battalion base in Kimberley, Northern Cape.

This ceremony is part of a series of events in seven provinces this week, culminating in 10,000 officers completing their basic training. During the 2023 State of the Nation Address, President Ramaphosa pledged to strengthen the SAPS by deploying more officers and establishing specialised teams targeting specific crimes. These passing-out parades align with his commitment to recruit and train 10,000 new personnel this year.

Joining the President will be Police Minister General Bheki Cele, Deputy Minister of Police Cassel Mathale, and National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola. Earlier this week, Minister Cele reassured the nation of heightened law enforcement efforts during the festive season to ensure a safe holiday period, emphasising an all-hands-on-deck approach by law enforcement officials. Cele highlighted the festive season’s characteristics, marked by celebrations and increased migration, pledging intensified responses to crime during and beyond the holidays.
