Menlyn Park Shopping Centre Allocates Parking Space to Local Taxis
Tshwane’s Menlyn Park shopping centre in the east of Pretoria has reached an agreement with Menlyn Taxi Association (MTA) and Mamelodi Amalgamated Taxi Association (Mata) to allocate parking space for taxi holding purposes, putting an end to the long-standing challenge of taxis spilling over into the intersection of Atterbury Road and Lois Avenue.
Katlego Mathebe, MMC for Roads and Transport, announced the development, stating that after extensive negotiations with taxi industry leaders, the shopping centre management has agreed to convert a portion of the parking area inside the centre for use as a holding area for minibus taxis. The facility will provide approximately 135 additional parking bays for tax-holding purposes.

Mathebe stressed that the parking bay would be leased, addressing the historical chaos caused by public transport operations around the centre. The challenges at the Atterbury Road and Lois Avenue intersection stemmed from a need for dedicated public transport facilities in the area, causing inconvenience for both the community and commuters.
“After the signing of the agreement, centre management will now commence essential construction work to ensure the parking bays for holding purposes are fit for purpose, accommodating a mixed fleet of taxi vehicles. The construction is set to be completed early in 2024, with the official hand-over ceremony expected in April,” Mathebe explained.
Introducing the taxi rank at the mall is a significant step towards establishing a long-term and permanent intermodal public transport facility. Mathebe concluded, “Signing the agreement with the affected taxi associations is a great milestone and our commitment to a whole-society approach.” The move should bring order and efficiency to the public transport operations in the vicinity, benefiting both the taxi associations and the local community.
