Senzo Meyiwa Trial Deferred to January 2024 Amid Advocate’s Health Concerns

The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial was postponed. Delays already marked it. IOL reports that the court has granted a postponement to January 22, 2024, following a complaint from defence advocate Bheki Mngomezulu about his health.

Visibly displeased, Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng agreed to the request, allowing Mngomezulu time to seek medical attention. The court, led by deputy judge president Audrey Ledwaba, had emphasised the need for a swift resolution to accommodate other cases.

The trial, which was scheduled to go on recess, involves five men accused of murdering the former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper over nine years ago. The accused were charged six years after the incident, linked through the efforts of the Cold Case Unit officers led by Brigadier Bongani Gininda.

The trial-within-a-trial, examining the alleged confessions of two defendants, will resume in January.
