Suspended Chief Magistrate Desmond Nair, Accused of Graft, Set to Appear in Court
Suspended Pretoria Chief Magistrate Desmond Nair, facing corruption charges linked to state capture-related kickback allegations, appeared in court today.
Eyewitness News reports that Nair’s legal troubles stem from revelations at the State Capture Commission of Inquiry, where it was disclosed that he received “home security upgrades” from a Bosasa subsidiary, Sondolo IT. The corruption charges were filed in 2022 following Commission Chair Raymond Zondo’s referral of the matter to law enforcement agencies in his final report.

Nair’s initial court appearance took place in October 2022, and the case, last heard in July, was scheduled for today, awaiting the outcome of representations he made to the State to dismiss the charges. Pre-trial proceedings are tentatively set for January 2024.
Nair has maintained that he privately arranged the home upgrades and denied involvement in corruption or state capture.
