Gauteng Sportsman of the Year Award Goes to Kickboxer
Ahmed Mahomed, the accomplished kickboxer from Lakefield, secured the title of Gauteng Sportsman of the Year at the prestigious Gauteng Sports Awards held at the Ace Ntsoelengoe Stadium in Mohlakeng on November 18. Mahomed, a standout on the World Association of Kickboxing Organisations (WAKO) circuit, outshone competitors such as national archery champion Christian Beyers de Klerk and equestrian Jacques Horn.

Although he didn’t clinch the popular Sports Personality of the Year award, which went to wheelchair tennis ace Kgothatso Montjane, Mahomed’s achievements in the squared circle were exceptional. Trained by Aslam Mahomed, president of the South African Kickboxing Association (SAKA) and WAKO African president, Ahmed Mahomed boasts a remarkable track record as a two-time African and world champion with victories across Europe and Africa.
Ranked as the number one kickboxer in the world in his category, Mahomed’s stellar performances in 2023 include three golds, three silvers, and a bronze at the Flanders Cup in Belgium, a gold, silver, and two bronze medals in the Italian World Cup and Italian Open, and two golds at the Hungarian Open, among other victories. Additionally, he secured two gold medals in the Clash of the Continents against Canada in Oudtshoorn and dominated the SAKA national championships in Limpopo with five gold medals, earning him the title of Fighter of the Year.
While Mahomed’s sister, Salaamah, narrowly missed the sportswoman of the year award, the accolade went to Zeney van der Walt, the 400m and 4x400m African champion and Commonwealth bronze medallist in the 400m.
