Residents of Johannesburg have been facing acute water shortages for almost two weeks now, resulting in dry taps and low water pressure in some areas of the city. Eyewitness News reported that infrastructure failures and power cuts from supplier Rand Water had left residents frustrated and deprived of a fundamental human right.

A group of residents from Robertsham silently protested during a media briefing by Johannesburg Mayor Thapelo Amad, with a placard reading “water is a basic human right,” hoping Rand Water or the City of Johannesburg would address their plight. While Amad assured the residents that he was committed to permanently solving the issue, some remain sceptical after weeks of inconvenience and frustration.
