Huge Turnout: One Million South Africans Enlist for Saturday’s Voting Registration

The Electoral Commission said one million citizens have registered to vote during the second day of the Voter Registration Weekend. The commission reported over a million registrations were recorded at the 23,296 voting stations across the country on the first day. As of 8:00 AM the following day, 91% of the voting stations had already opened, with the remaining stations opening shortly after that. SANews reports at 12:30 PM 609,447 registration transactions were recorded at voting stations. Additionally, the commission achieved a significant milestone with over 100,000 online registrations, with 40,000 more registered today.

The commission acknowledged the enthusiastic participation of South Africans, both online and at registration stations, and urged those who haven’t done so to utilise the remaining hours of the day to register, re-register, or check their details. Despite the success, the commission addresses some online registrations marked as “pending.” This status arises when the uploaded ID image cannot be recognised or when an image other than an ID is uploaded. The commission advised voters to take extra care and follow system prompts when uploading ID images.
