Duduza community

The Duduza community discussed business growth opportunities during a community visit by the Gauteng Department of Economic Development led by MEC Tasneem Motara at Monty Motloung Hall on Monday. The purpose of the visit was to provide information to the community on various aspects, including the township economy, service delivery, SMME development, partnerships, skills development, training, funding, business formalisation, and market access. Representatives from different departments, such as the liquor board, consumer affairs champions, and The Gauteng Enterprise Propeller (GEP), were present to share insights on how they can assist the community. Ward 98 Clr Thabo Motaung expressed hope that the community would leave the hall more informed, highlighting Duduza as the only township without shops owned by foreign nationals.

During the visit, the department’s deputy director general (DDG), Mpho Nawa, emphasised the government’s initiative to bring services closer to the people, addressing their needs and providing assistance. MEC Motara delivered the keynote address, stating that the department and its partners have supported communities in starting and growing businesses, covering financial assistance and various business aspects. She mentioned the focus on Townships Informal Settlements Hostels (TISH) due to their underdeveloped nature and lack of opportunities for residents. Motara highlighted the Township Economic Development Act, aiming to regulate laws and formalise the township economy while providing funding.

In the context of liquor licenses, Motara announced the department’s plan to launch an online application system, streamlining the process and reducing red tape associated with obtaining licenses—the community visit aimed to empower Duduza with valuable information and resources for economic development and growth.
