South Africa’s Unemployment Rate Returns to Pre-COVID-19 Levels
The South African economy has successfully recovered from the job losses incurred during the challenging period of the Covid-19 pandemic. Statistics SA’s quarterly labour force survey, released recently, indicates a notable decline in the unemployment rate to 31.9% in the third quarter, essentially returning to pre-COVID-19 levels.

This positive trend started in the second quarter when the unemployment rate fell to 32.6%. The improvement in employment figures serves as a favourable point for the ANC’s electoral campaign, suggesting economic stabilisation under its governance. However, critics, including DA spokesperson Michael Cardo, argue that the ANC has failed to address underlying issues contributing to youth unemployment, particularly the unstable power supply.
Despite differing views, ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhegu Motsiri sees the positive employment statistics as evidence of the party’s ongoing efforts to revitalise the economy post-pandemic, in alignment with its 2023 manifesto promises.
