Pair Faces Heavy Fine or Prison for Elephant Tusk Possession
In a recent ruling by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court, Innocent Tendere and Shelton Zimizi have been sentenced to either pay a substantial fine or serve a five-year prison term for their illegal possession of elephant tusks. This verdict was handed down on October 24, following their guilty verdict on October 19.

The two individuals were apprehended by Benoni K9 members, with assistance from the Pretoria K9 unit, on November 16 of the previous year. They were found in possession of three elephant tusks (ivory) at Oriental Plaza. Subsequently, the case was transferred to the Hawks’ Germiston-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit for further examination.
The accused initially appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on December 2, 2022, where they were denied bail. After multiple court appearances, they were eventually sentenced to a choice between paying a fine of R700,000 or serving a five-year prison sentence.
