Illegal Dumping Site om Northwold Raises Concerns Among Residents
Illegal dumping in Northwold worries residents as rubble and dirt at an unauthorised dumping site have raised concerns among the local population.
The problem has escalated as the unauthorised dumping site at the corner of Malibongwe Drive and President Fouche Streets continues to grow. The rubble and debris are now encroaching upon the passageway that connects Malibongwe and Fifth Road. The dumping site not only presents a visual eyesore but also poses severe difficulties for pedestrians and workers who frequently use the area.
Tragically, what was once a dumping ground for refuse has transformed into a criminal hotspot, significantly raising security concerns for those who rely on the pathway.
Peter Jooster, the chairman of the Sunrise Estate situated near the dumping site, expressed grave concern about the safety of women using this passage. He highlighted that the situation has become unacceptable and has already resulted in criminal incidents in recent months, including robberies, shootings, stabbings, rapes, and muggings.
Furthermore, Jooster fears that as the rubble creeps further into the area, it provides criminals with easier access to his community, putting vulnerable residents and even security personnel at risk.
Xolani Fihla, the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), confirmed their awareness of the dumping site and the broader problem of illegal dumping within the city. He noted that there are more than 100 illegal dumping hotspots across Johannesburg, and it’s impractical to have officers permanently stationed at each location.
Fihla urged residents to assist by reporting incidents of illegal dumping. He advised residents to document these occurrences with clear photographs of the vehicles involved, precisely capturing their registration numbers. These images should be sent to the Anti-Illegal Dumping Hotline at 082 779 1361, along with the date, time, and location details.
The JMPD will monitor the area closely, and individuals found guilty of illegal dumping will face the appropriate consequences. The community of Northwold is eager for the swift removal of the rubble. It seeks increased patrols by the JMPD to maintain security and deter illegal dumping.
Fihla clarified that the responsibility for clearing dumping sites lies with Pikitup, and residents are encouraged to contact Joburg Connect to log a call and request cleanup.
