Local Designer Shines in Paris Fashion Scene

The House of Decorum’s journey to Paris Fashion Week was filled with late nights, early mornings, stress, and the ultimate joy of seeing their international-standard range come to life. This fashion house, known for crafting bespoke suits for both men and women, is the brainchild of the dynamic duo Mphahlela and Rethabile Mokgatle, affectionately known as Mr. and Mrs. Decorum. Their passion for fashion extends beyond clothing; it’s deeply rooted in the art and storytelling woven into their garments.

House of Decorum specialises in timeless professional suits, shirts, and trousers, creating stylish and sophisticated attire. Their unique style, inspired by the Italian concept of sprezzatura, captures the essence of their creations. As Mr Decorum explains, “Decorum” relates to a certain behaviour, and their clothing reflects the need for well-fitted suits and tailored garments that embody sophistication.

The fashion house’s goal is to make every individual feel like they are part of the artistry, involving them in fabric selection and even intricate details like buttons. The aim is for people to walk into any professional setting with confidence, knowing they are wearing a well-tailored garment made specifically for their body.

Participating in Paris Fashion Week was no small feat, especially as the couple had just welcomed their daughter, Warona. Preparation for such a global showcase with a newborn seemed insane, but their determination prevailed. Despite obstacles like Stage 6 load-shedding, virtual measurements for international models, and a tight two-week deadline, their garments fit the models like gloves.

From the very first stitch, the vision was clear: to establish the House of Decorum as a global powerhouse with an unwavering commitment to quality. Their aspirations extend to revitalising South Africa’s textile industry, once dominant in Cape Town, Durban, and the Eastern Cape. On the international front, they plan to open brick-and-mortar stores in influential hubs like the UAE, Singapore, New York, Paris, and London to cater to a global clientele.
